First Lady to Take the Stage

8-31-04 - NEW YORK (AP) The first lady and the movie star governor. They're the featured attractions Tuesday night in New York on the second night of the Republican National Convention.

Monday, delegates heard praise of President Bush's anti-terror policies at a convention where the Nine-Eleven attacks have been a constant theme.

With the exception of her husband, Laura Bush will be virtually the last member of the Bush family to arrive at the convention. Former President George HW Bush and his wife, Barbara, were warmly greeted by delegates last night. They took their seats in the presidential box alongside the current president's twin daughters, Jenna and Barbara. The president's nephew, George P. Bush, is also speaking tonight. He's been helping the party reach out to Hispanic voters.

Before the current first lady addresses the delegates, they'll hear from California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Meanwhile, there was a violent confrontation outside the Republican National Convention Monday and things could get ugly again today.

A march from the United Nations to Madison Square Garden ended in violence after a protester attacked a plainclothes detective, knocking him unconscious and leaving him hospitalized. Hundreds of police in riot gear swarmed the area, pushing protesters away from the Garden and into nearby side streets.

Police are bracing for more trouble. Activists have designated today an official day of civil disobedience. They're planning sit-ins, street theater and even vandalism aimed at corporations with links to the Bush family or Republicans.

Demonstrators plan to start early in the day by confronting Republicans at a breakfast at the Tavern on the Green restaurant in Central Park.
