8-31-04 - The FBI is taking part in an investigation into allegations of wrongdoing at the Bryan County Jail. Local prosecutors called in the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation last week amid accusations that a jailer raped a female inmate, but First News has learned the FBI is also asking questions about possible civil rights violations.
The allegations surround inmate on inmate abuse, that wasn’t stopped by jailers. The jail administrator resigned on Monday, and today Sheriff Bill Sturch says changes are on the way, pending the outcome of the investigations. The jail was taken over by the Jail Authority Board in July. Sturch says the recent allegations aren’t an indictment of the new board, but rather growing pains that come with any newly formed entity.
The OSBI and FBI will submit their finding to the Bryan County DA later this week.
