SHERMAN, TX -- SHERMAN, TX -- For one young Sherman boy, the game of golf is more than just his favorite sport, it's actually changed his life. Now his experience motivates him to raise money to help kids with medical conditions, and his latest efforts are truly a hole in one.
When you look at Colin Ashlock, you might see an 11 year old with a great swing. What you might *not see is a kid who survived a debilitating disease.
When Colin was 8, he noticed something was wrong with his right hip.
"I was telling my mom and dad, oh mom my hip hurts, my hip hurts really bad," Colin said.
Colin was diagnosed with Legg-Calve-Perthes, a painful condition in which blood flow is cut off to the hip, causing the joint to deteriorate.
So, he and his family made the trip from Sherman to Dallas, where doctors at Scottish Rite Hospital performed surgery--placing pins and plates in his femur and hip.
"It's hard to believe just three years ago, Colin could barely walk. But thanks to the game of golf, he's regained motion, and also learned some valuable lessons."
"I never give up. Because God and everybody's on my side, helpin' me," said Colin.
And now he's giving back to some of those people, through the game he loves so much. Colin set out to raise $5,000 dollars in sponsorships for the Hospital's "KidSwing McKinney" Golf Tournament.
"I'm trying to raise the most amount of money so I can pay back what they gave to me," said Colin.
It's a gift the non-profit hospital appreciates, and one they say sets an example for the entire community.
"It's been a joy to meet Colin and his family," said Melinda Wenk, with Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. "Colin is wise beyond his years. It's really neat to meet a young man who's wanting to do so much for a hospital that's helped him with medical treatment."
In March, Colin had another surgery--this one to remove the hardware in his leg. Now, just four months later, he's back on the green.
But he'll keep going back to Scottish Rite Hospital.
Not because he needs to--because he wants to help other kids get better.
Just as he did.
"I went in there and it didn't cost my family anything to get me taken care of. And with the blessings and the help of God, I'm able to walk today."
Colin has not only met, but exceeded his goal--raising $5,200 dollars for the hospital--Just in time for the tournament Monday, July 19.
