GAINESVILLE, TX-- While the campus of NCTC in Gainesville, is typically a little quieter during the summer months, a group of young students are preparing to turn things up.

The first ever western swing style music camp has taken over the college this week, providing an opportunity to bring together local musicians in preparation for a free community concert.

In recognition of one of the genres pioneers, The Bob Wills Swing School is a five day program bringing students together to study the unique styles of western swing music.

Pianos, fiddles, drums and trumpets can be heard across campus, as students as young as 12, hone in on their skills.

Yodeling is just one of Kristyn Harris's musical talents, she also plays guitar and sings in a western swing band.

"Being in a band really teaches you how to work together with a lot of people, and really listen," Harris, said.

Although she's been interested in music her entire life, she says she's never had instruction quite like this before.

"I'm a big fan of Bob Wills, and so I thought it was the perfect thing. I guess I got into western swing music, because I have horses, and that music just kind of seemed to go with it," Harris, said.

This week, Harris, along with 16 other music students are participating in the Bob Wills Swing School on the campus of NCTC.

Instructor Dave Alexander explained, "They're jamming all night long, we have to put them in bed practically, and say, ‘Hey stop, it's over! It's 2 o' clock in the morning!’ We got to get up for theory. We start theory first thing in the morning."

The older students stay in dorms, and practice at the concert hall for five days straight. Alexander said he's been working on the idea for years.

"It was a combination of an entire western swing band camp, and it would include steel guitar, piano, bass, drums, singers and fiddles and horns," he, said.

Alexander was thrilled with the turn-out for his first class; especially that it drew students who are as passionate about the western swing style, as he is.

"I just love the sound of it, and it’s fun to play,” Harris, said. “It’s swingy, and I just completely get into it."

Students will show off what they've learned at the school, Saturday, July 31st, during a free performance on the NCTC campus starting at 1 o’ clock.
