PONTOTOC COUNTY, OK-- When law enforcement noticed a recent increase in motor vehicle accidents throughout Pontotoc County, they decided to focus their efforts on trying to drastically reduce those numbers.
Troopers and deputies will be out until 3 am, Saturday morning trying to show motorists just how serious they are about keeping roads safe.
After a brief meeting, troopers and deputies from Pontotoc County hit the highways looking for a wide range of traffic offenders.
Just minutes into the operation, they made one arrest for a possible DUI, and just 30 minutes later-- two people were booked into the justice center.
"The highest number of fatality crashes, that are involving drunk drivers, or accidents that involve a lot of injury, that are involving drunk drivers; we have the largest number of those crashes here, in Pontotoc county," Lt. Brett Sayre, said.
Troopers representing six Oklahoma counties were scattered throughout the area, driving around and setting up vehicle checkpoints.
Sheriff John Christian said, "It gets a lot of people off the street that, we've been looking for, because they actually drive into our vehicle safety check-points. We'll check them and they may have a warrant on them, so we make a lot of arrests that way."
Based on similar assignments in the past, they expect to bring in between 60 to 70 offenders during the overnight shift.
"We just picked the county that we needed the most enforcement in at that time. Which is Pontotoc County for us, to reduce the crashes," Lt. Sayre, said.
However, troopers say they'll be doing the special assignments again in several other counties, in the upcoming months.
