Army Corps of Engineers launches "Learn to Swim Well" initiative

LAKE TEXOMA-With the 4th of July coming up, the Army Corps of Engineers came up with a program to make sure you can enjoy the lake safely.
It's called the "Learn to Swim Well" initiative. Assistant project manager, B.J. Parkey said there've been six drownings in Tulsa District lakes this year. He said most of the victims didn't know how to swim.
Parkey said starting this weekend, rangers will provide information to lake visitors on where they can get swimming lessons in their community. He also said learning how to swim well can dramatically increase your chances of surviving while in open water.

"With young kids between the ages of 1 and 4, if they've had some type of swimming lesson, they have an 88% greater chance of surviving an accidental fall into the water. A large majority of our drownings, that actually did drown, didn't expect to be in the water in the first place," he said.
