Arrest made in campaign sign theft

ADA, OK - An Ada business owner is out of jail after he was arrested for allegedly stealing a campaign sign a day before last week's runoff election.

Johnny Boyd was arrested by deputies at his work, Boyd Wrecker Service on Sandy Creek Drive in Ada last Tuesday for a crime some might consider petty.

"When anybody reports a crime to us we investigate it," Pontotoc County Sheriff John Christian said. "No matter how small we think it is, if there is evidence to send a report to the district attorney we do and thats what occurred here."

Christian said Boyd was caught red-handed stealing a campaign sign belonging to incumbent District 2 County Commissioner Danny Davis.

"She said that she witnessed the suspect taking the sign when she approached him he said that Danny Davis had given him permission to take that sign," Christian said.

But that excuse didn't check out.

"My understanding is that she then contacted Danny and he said no he hadn't," Christian said.

Davis was defeated in last week's primary runoff election by Randy Floyd.

We were told Boyd is a supporter of Floyd but doesn't know him personally.

Christian, who was recently re-elected as Pontotoc County Sheriff said things like this just come with the territory.

"I had numerous signs disappear," Christian said. "That happens. That is part of the campaign process you go through."

Davis did not return our phone calls.

Floyd, who begins his term in January said he had "no comment".
