At least 1 dead, 17 injured in Central Texas crash

BRUCEVILLE-EDDY, Texas (AP) - At least one person is dead after a chain collision of 13 vehicles on a busy Central Texas interstate, including four tractor-trailer rigs.

The Texas Department of Public Safety says the crash happened about 12:45 p.m. Monday on Interstate 35 northbound about 1 mile south of Bruceville-Eddy.

DPS Trooper D.L. Wilson says at least one person was killed in a vehicle crushed beneath one of the 18-wheelers. A fire-rescue officer who was able to crawl under the trailer confirmed the fatality.

The crash closed the northbound lanes of the heavily traveled interstate for hours, forcing traffic onto frontage roads. Senior Trooper Harpin Meyer said 16 people were able to drive themselves to a Temple hospital 15 miles to the south. Another was taken 15 miles north to a Waco hospital.
