Benefit dinner for Calera first grader

CALERA, OK -- The Calera community is coming together to help a local family.

Nicholas Hodge has a rare heart condition and has had several heart surgeries since birth. But during his latest surgery, a major artery ruptured and he suffered brain damage.

Nicholas and his family spent the summer in a St. Louis hospital and just got back to Calera. This week was Nicholas' first week back to school.

"A couple of weeks ago the family was informed that he may never walk or talk again. And of course, as you saw just a minute ago, he's a very active little boy now and when I picked him up at his bus stop on Monday, I was not expecting him to be there," Calera teacher, Macy Bryant said. "I knew he was home but not expecting him to be there. So, that was very very nice to see him there."

To ease some of the financial burden, a group of Calera teachers, Platter Baptist Church and the Calera Masonic Lodge are holding a benefit dinner Sunday, September 23. It will be held at the Calera high school cafeteria. It costs $6 for adults and $3 for kids 10 and under. There will also be a live auction.

If you would like to make a donation you can call the Calera school at 580-434-5603.
