Bonham community playground finished

BONHAM, TX - After 6 years of planning and 5 days of construction, Bonham's Powder Creek Park has a new community playground.

After 5 full days of construction, volunteers put down their tools and watched as children played at Bonham's new community playground for the first time.

"All the kids love it and we just hope everyone will be able to enjoy it," said 15 year old volunteer Kyle Curtis.

About 300 volunteers helped build a unique, custom designed playground in Bonham's Powder Creek Park and the weather didn't stop them from finishing on time.

"Shockingly over spring break it has been very cold on a couple of days but despite the cold we had tremendous volunteers over the whole week and I was really amazed even on the cold days how many people came," said volunteer Megan Massey.

There's not another playground like this in America. Each piece is special to Bonham's history: an Alamo tribute for James Bonham who fought at the Alamo, teepee for Bonham Warriors, and a climbing wall designed and painted by local artist Chris Cravens.

"We did signs and the climbing wall and all kinds of things," said Cravens.

"There's a lot of fun equipment!" said Sarah Dardaganian, as she played in the park.

Plans six years in the making, are finally a reality. Area businesses donated money, time, and products to make the build week happen, and the Bonham Fire Department had volunteers helping with every shift.

"They were good skilled laborers for us," said Massey.

When we asked Dardaganian what she thought of the final product she told News 12, " It's a really fun park and it's really cool."
