Boy Raises Money to Buy Christmas Gifts for Elderly

ARDMORE, OK -- "We're having a bake sale to raise money for the people in the nursing home, who nobody remember them and we're getting gifts with the money we get."

6-year-old, Brody Harris, says he was visiting an Ardmore nursing home where one of his family member's was employed last holiday season, when he realized some of the residents had no Christmas presents, and no family to visit them.

"Nobody had any gifts and I wanted for everyone to have something."

Brody decided to start "Santa for Seniors" to make sure everyone would have a reason to celebrate.

"I felt good as soon as I got them all the gifts," said Brody.

His father, Jeff Harris, says it was such a success last year that they decided to do it again this year.
Sunday, Brody and some of his friends raised close to five hundred dollars during a bake sale.

"It's a great feeling, you know. He could be asking for games for himself or whatever and he chooses to give back to the community, so, that's the best part of it."

Harris says they buy items that nursing home residents are in need of, as well as, some gifts for entertainment.

"Lotion, body wash, stuff they like to do...we've gotten them a wii last year and wii games to go with it," said Brody.

Harris says while the idea began with one nursing home, they are now planning to deliver gifts to multiple nursing homes across Southern Oklahoma.

"Last year we actually hand delivered. We went to the party and it was great. I mean, it was great, you know, some of them have out-lived their families and it was just great being a part of it. Let them have a little excitement."

"i see a bunch of surprised faces when they open them," says Brody.
