SHERMAN, TX-The Boy Scouts of America announced they're looking into changing an old policy, which would open up scout membership to gay youth and leaders. And it's stirring up controversy across the country and right here in Texoma.

In about two weeks, the Boy Scouts of America might be changing its controversial membership policy by giving local sponsors the freedom to decide whether or not to allow gays into troops.Tuesday, a sponsor and a former Boy Scout about what they thought of the proposed change.

Covenant Presbyterian Church Pastor, Rev. Neill Morgan said they have sponsored local Boy Scout troops for many years and he supports the organization's potential policy change, which opens up membership to gay youth and leaders.

"We have a policy in the church, in our denomination now that has evolved in the past 40 years where we do not ever discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation," he said.

Boy Scouts of America Scout Executive CEO, Pat Currie said the proposed change would allow local sponsors, religious or civic, to make the decision whether or not they'll uphold membership restrictions based on sexual orientation.

BSA released a statement:
"Under this proposed policy, the BSA would not require any chartered organization to act in ways inconsistent with that organization's mission, principles, or religious beliefs."

"We know that it takes time for organizations to change and to come into new understandings over time and so that's the same thing that's happening to the Boy Scouts of America now. It's that they're evolving and we understand that," said Morgan.

Not everyone agrees with the proposed policy change, like former Boy Scout, David Beaudin.

"It sounds like they're trying to introduce, I guess, the gay rights into it," he said.

He said it's an issue best left alone.

"My feeling on it is not to allow gays into it. Nothing personal, it's just when you're talking about kids, it's already a sensitive subject to begin with," he said.

Currie said the national board of directors will be discussing the possible policy change at next week's meeting.
