Man drives through Midway Mall entrance

SHERMAN, TX - For a few minutes Friday afternoon, Midway Mall was thrown into chaos.

"We were standing over there shopping and they yelled gun, gun, gun, gunman," said Kyle Stubbs, a witness.

Shoppers didn't know what happened after they heard a loud crash. That is, until they saw a car through the front door.

Assistant Police Chief Ken Francis said a man crashed into the entrance.

"Then got out of the vehicle and was stopped by mall security, they were able to get him into custody," he said.

Francis said the man did not have a gun and no shots were fired.

Police aren't releasing his identity at this time.

Police said after the suspect crashed into the doors, he grabbed a cane out of the back of his car and started hitting doors and windows. That's when he went inside the mall.

A witness told News 12 he tried to attack a mall security guard with the cane, but the guard was able to subdue him.

Kristy Foster, a bystander, said she called police as soon as it happened.

"I saw him yelling, I couldn't tell what he was saying, and then he hit the pylon and then floored it right into the doors," she said.

Francis said they can't confirm the suspect's motive for the incident. But witnesses said the man was angry because security took a camera away from him.

"He just kept screaming, I want my camera back," said Mike Dunaway, a witness.

Francis said they took the suspect in for mental evaluation.

"At this point I don't have any further information, we're still trying to find out what's going on, why did he do this," he said.

Authorities gave the all clear around 4:45 Friday. Francis said no one was injured in the incident.
