State fire marshal investigating Cartwright suspicious house fires

CARTWRIGHT, OKLAHOMA -- Grayson County fire marshals have still not named those responsible for a string of suspicious house fires at Sherwood Shores just a few weeks back.

In an eleven day time frame, seven houses in the same Sherwood Shores neighborhood were set on fire.

This weekend, another area of Texoma also was victim to suspicious fires.

On Friday, two Cartwright homes went up in flames, along with another house fire on Saturday.

Cartwright's assistant fire chief says their fire department doesn't get a lot of house fires, so when they got a call Friday night for two house fires -- just around the corner from each other -- they knew it was suspicious.

Assistant Fire Chief Jonathan Horn says just before midnight Friday, Cartwright and Colbert fire departments responded to two structure fires -- two blocks apart -- off Fourth Street.

The trailer homes are a total loss and were ruled as suspicious.

The next night, before 2 a.m. Saturday, another trailer of Persimmon Road was also fully engulfed in flames.

Cartwright and Colbert firefighters fought the blaze, but the trailer was a total loss and a dog was killed in the fire.

Horn says working three house fires that close in proximity was unnerving.

"Well, at first when I heard it, I thought maybe it was side by side fires, but when we rounded the corner and they were two blocks apart, it was, wow, not normal for our area," Horn said.

The Bryan County Sheriff's Office is helping Cartwright Fire Department investigate the fires.

The state fire marshal will be in Cartwright soon to help with the investigation.
