TEXOMA - Grayson College hosted a luncheon today for Black History Month.

Faculty, students, and alumni joined to honor African American history and reflect on how the college promotes diversity.

The College's African American Initiative Coordinator says their students have become more diverse in recent years.

Professor Susie Viars says a diverse learning community teaches students how to relate to people of all races.

According to Viars, "Well, you don't live in this world by yourself and sometimes you're not going to be with mom and daddy, or sister and brother, so you need to know how to interact with everyone. And so if you don't get that, you may be lost."

Fred Douglass Early Childhood Center celebrated the final day of black history month Friday morning.

Students and teachers put on a program for parents.

Organizers say the theme of the day was "The Dream."

Kids performed songs, dances, and skits for the audience.

Teacher Chiniqua Hill says their goal is to teach the kids the importance of their history. According to Ms. Hill, "The best part is the kids. Just to see them come alive on stage. Just to see them know their history, and us teach them their history. It's just wonderful."

Hill says they start planning and practicing for this event every year in early January.

BONHAM
Bonham also celebrated black history month Friday.

Dancers from the University of North Texas showed off their talents for dozens of attendees.

An area president of the NAACP Willie Hudspeth also came to the VA hospital in Bonham.

Attendees said it's an important event to celebrate.

Tamara Johnson, a social worker at the VA clinic, says "I just want everybody to remember the struggles, the hard work the efforts that African Americans have played"

This year's theme was was "At the Crossroads of Freedom and Equality"
