Ceremony held for fallen law enforcement officers

PARIS, Texas -- The Texas Department of Public Safety honored fallen law enforcement officers during a Wednesday memorial service in Paris.

Names of the local fallen officers were read off one by one, followed by a 21-gun salute.

The last name read was DPS trooper Jeffrey Nichols who died back in March.

His parents were given a plaque in honor of their son by DPS Sergeant Jim Kain. The plaque was a gift from a local man that wished to honor the fallen trooper and his family.

DPS Sergeant Jim Kain says today was extra special.

"This year we lost one of our troopers...our own..he's one of our family so that's really what made it really special today. It's special every year but more so this year."

Twelve names were read at the ceremony. All Lamar County officers killed in the line of duty dating back to 1867.
