DURANT, OK -- The Choctaw Nation held a celebration Tuesday for a new start up program placing an emphasis on children.

In recognition of the national week of the child, the nation declared Tuesday as the Choctaw Day of the Young Child.

Community members and choctaw executives read to children and spoke about the importance of educating them.

The assistant chief says focusing on children is critical to the Choctaw Nation.

Assistant Chief of the Choctaw Nation Gary Batton said, "They have so much fun, they have so much energy, we just wanna make sure that we funnel and harness that energy to things that's positive for them."

The Choctaw Nation says they have 17 other startup programs similar to this one.
