Christmas in July

Dozens came to Durant for a day of cruisin' to celebrate Christmas in July.

"Even just the drive down here was a blast. And it's for a really good cause. Families Feeding Families is an awesome organization. They help out a lot of people on a daily basis," said participant Kelli Taylor.

Christmas in July is a toy run benefiting Families Feeding Families, an organization that helps feed and cloth those in need. They're collecting Christmas presents early this year.

"We want every kid to have a good Christmas," Taylor said.

"You hear on the news a lot that everybody is trying to get a goal of toys you know, and it seems like it's always last minute. So, we decided we would try this in July and kind of help get a head start," Michael Mewzel said.

Mewzel and his wife founded the Christmas in July Toy Run. Helping a charity and adding in motorcycles, something he loves, seemed like the perfect way to help out.

"We wanted to help somebody with something. Because we feel pretty fortunate in our lives and so we wanted to help somebody, and we just decided that Families Feeding Families was a good organization to help out," Mewzel said.

About 750 children in Durant and surrounding areas are able to have a good Christmas because of the organization.

"This helps us get the toys started and people start remembering that it's coming up and the donations start once this weekend happens," Families Feeding Families director Tish Burkhalter said.

The organization's been helping families since 2004. They're fortunate people want to plan ahead, even in this 100 degree weather.

"We are able to help our working, middle class families that have to choose between paying their electric bill, paying their utilities, paying their rent or having Christmas," Burkhalter said.
