City of Bonham helps Meals on Wheels

BONAHM, TX-- Every week, Glinda Whitworth, delivers meals to senior citizens who need a little extra help, through Meals on Wheels. Whitworth is able to say hello to someone who may not see anyone else throughout the day.

"Well, I like people, and I like the senior citizens and it really gives me great feeling when I can check on them."

Meals on Wheels of Texoma, Serves Cooke, Fannin, and Grayson Counties. In January, Bonham opened their SNAP center, for senior citizens. It's also home to Meals on Wheels.

Friday, Mayor, Roy Floyd, presented Meals on Wheels and the SNAP center, a $1,000 check.

"We try to do something that's meaningful to them, that helps them out with their things that they need done," Floyd explained.

The city makes this donation every year. Greg Pittman, Executive Director of Meals on Wheels for Texoma, said this money goes a long way.

"One and nine seniors suffer from food insecurity here in Fannin County, the money that we receive in the form of donations goes to support home deliver meal programs and what we call congregant meal programs."

But Pittman said, it's not just the money they're thankful for, its volunteers like Whitworth. They save the agency half-a-million dollars a year.

Whitworth said the feeling of helping others is priceless.

"This is something that has to be done because it's a good service."
