LEONARD, TX -- Less than a week ago, a Collin County Deputy and his wife were found dead in their home after it caught fire. Friday, the two were laid to rest.
Family, friends and officers from several law enforcement agencies filled the First Baptist Church in Leonard, all paying their respects to Deputy Richard Fields and his wife Rebecca.
They shared their favorite memories of the couple and told of how the two impacted their lives.
"He was one of my best friends. We've been pretty tight, been through a lot, had a lot of fun," a co-worker and friend said.
"I will actually use the words, the last words that Becky ever told me. 'I will always love you no matter what your views are, even though you're wrong," Jamie Shaw said.
So many people attended the service, extra chairs had to be brought in and many could not fit inside the church.
"It tells me he's touched a lot of folks lives that we don't really know about," Sheriff Terry Box said.
Collin County Sheriff Terry Box says it's been a difficult week at work.
"It's been very solemn around the office. And everybody remembering him, remembering how he acted toward them when they first met him and how his personality was. It's all been very, very positive though," Sheriff Box said.
Deputy Richard Fields, also known as Dickie, worked for the Collin County Sheriffs Office for 18 years. His co-workers describe him as friendly, helpful and quite the talker.
"For knowing Dickie, I'm a better man," a friend said.
Friends say Rebecca was a wonderful wife and the two treated every one like family.
"They loved everybody," the Pastor said.
As the pall bearers carried the lone casket out of the church, people reflected on Richard and Rebecca and the impact we can all have on each other's lives.
"I don't think we realize till after times like this of how many lives we effect on a daily basis. And how much your friendship or your kind words or your deeds mean to everybody until something like this happens," Sheriff Box said.
"You know, if you have the opportunity to talk to your friends and family, seize that moment. Seize that moment," a friend said.
The Fannin County Sheriff's Office has not released what caused the fire that destroyed their Ladonia home. The state fire marshal's office is assisting in the investigation.
