Community playground coming to Bonham

BONHAM, TX - The Bonham community is getting a new playground in Powder Creek Park. It will be built by volunteers in the community, in just a few weeks.

In Bonham's Powder Creek Park, there's not much for children to play on. But that's about to change.

Eleven year old Cassidy Barber says, "I've been hearing about it for a long time."

In just over two weeks, volunteers from the Bonham Community will come together to build a community playground.

"It's going to be a community effort. We're going to have community volunteers building the playground so that kids in Bonham and really Fannin County will have something to play on," said Sandy Barber, a Powder Creek Playground volunteer.

The build week will last from March 12th to March 16th.

"One of the biggest things we need right now is volunteers who are willing to come out and help us," said Barber.

General coordinator Michelle Griffith says she's excited the community will have a fun place for children to play outside, "Play is so very important for social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development."

Leathers and Associates, a new york based company, came to Bonham six years ago to talk to kids who would use the playing area, and designed a one of a kind playground.

So far, they've raised $107,000 for the park, and still need to raise $14,000.
