GAINESVILLE, TX-History was made in Gainesville Saturday afternoon as the Cooke County Courthouse was rededicated a hundred years after it first opened.
Hundreds turned up to take part in Cooke County Courthouse's rededication as well as its centennial celebration Saturday afternoon.
Organizations from all over the county participated in the ceremony with Muenster VFW posting the colors and Gainesville boy scouts leading the pledge of allegiance.
After the ceremony, people rushed into the courthouse to get a glimpse of the courthouse's new interiors. Cooke County judge, John Roan who emceed the event, was excited to see his new office.
"For the first time ever, I actually got an office in the courthouse and it really feels great because a lot of my childhood was around the courthouse and the courthouse has always been a part of my life," he said.
He said, aside from technological changes, the building has been restored to its former glory from 100 years ago.
"Oh I loved it. The older I get, I'm more into history," he said.
"It's so beautiful, my husband was the first constable here and I wanted to come and he's gone now. I wanted to be here in his place."
Gainesville resident, Betty Boone, was also impressed when she toured the building.
"It's gorgeous the colors in it and everything is so pretty and I'm so proud of the courthouse and I'm proud of the ones who worked so hard to get it where it's at," she said.
While the courthouse, often called "the grand old lady," received much reverence in its rededication Saturday, Roan reminds county residents that the courthouse is mainly there to serve them.
"This courthouse is their courthouse. It is not just a showplace, it's not just a monument to public officials as some individuals called it, it's a living breathing courthouse," he said.
