CARTWRIGHT, OK - A family is in mourning after a 15-year old boy drowned Tuesday afternoon off Sunset Cove Beach at Lake Texoma.

"Earlier today we got a call that two young people had gone swimming and that one of them had gone under and had not resurfaced," said OHP trooper Danny Chaffin.

OHP says around 1 p.m., the boy and his cousin were swimming back and forth between the beach and a sand bar when the boy stopped and started screaming for help.

"Typically when someone starts drowning they'll crawl up on top of you and take you under and that was the case here. The witness was able to get away from the victim and when he came back up he noticed his cousin was floating face down. Then he went under and never came back up," said Chaffin.

After hours of searching, rescue crews recovered the boy's body around 6:30. He was not wearing a life jacket.

"It's just a sad thing. These young people; if they wear a life jacket, then they are good. I cant say enough about the use of life jackets. If you are in a boat or around the water you ought to have a life jacket on," said Chaffin.

The identity of the boy has not been released at this time.
