SPRINGER, OK-- State Highway 53 between Fox and I-35 in Carter County has been named the 9th out of the 25 most dangerous highways in ODOT's division 7. Now, after years of accidents and complaints its finally on the road to recovery and Tuesdays meeting was the first step.

Amy Wisian and her family live off highway 53 in Springer, she said it's time to put an end to the accidents that happen here all too often.

"In the past 5 months three oil field trucks have tipped over in front of my parents place with its 4 miles west of I-35 " said Wisian.

Senator Frank Simpson says those accidents are the reason why several Oklahoma lawmakers are meeting with ODOT to hear the concerns of those carter county residents.

"That really got the attention of the residents because of the nature of those accidents, it was tanker trucks and the residents have also noticed an increase in traffic on Hwy 53, the unsafe conditions and the increased traffic have caused those residents a lot of concern" said Senator Simpson.

"There's not a shoulder and the lanes are only 11 foot wide verses the normal 12 foot wide lanes so it's a very dangerous road" said Wisian.

In the last 7 years 56 accidents happened along the highway. Wisian said she's happy something will finally be done especially with the increase in traffic.

Iit's not the rural highway that it used to be it is a highway that is traversed by much of the oil field traffic and people that live in western carter county that come in to Ardmore to work every day" said Wisian.

Senator Simpson said ODOT already has a 3 to 5 year plan in place to widen the road.

"The Goal tonight is just an information sharing meeting where ODOT can share information with the citizens to let them know they are aware of their concerns are aware of the unsafe conditions on Hwy 53 and they are putting a plan in place to direct or address those concerns" said Senator Simpson.

The public meeting started at 6 p.m. at the Milo Baptist Church located off of Highway 53 in Springer. Senator Simpson says repairs are set to begin in 2013.
