DENISON, TX-Munson Stadium has been a symbol of pride for Denison residents for 70 years. But now, engineers said the facility is outdated and, without renovations, it could be dangerous.

Steven Paulston said nothing's changed at Munson Stadium since he graduated from Denison High School in 1986 and he said repairs are long overdue.

"The concrete's spalding off, it's cracked and it's gonna be hard for someone handicapped to get up and down the bleachers," he said.

Wednesday afternoon, Denison school officials, along with city leaders, kicked off the last fundraising phase of the $5-million Munson Stadium Project. Superintendent Dr. Henry Scott said they've already secured $4.2 million from the district, the Munson foundation, Denison Development Foundation and anonymous donors. Now, they will need to raise the remaining $800,000.

"We're gonna sell bricks in the entry way in the 'Walk of Fame' that's what we're gonna call it. We're gonna do some other things, it will enhance and raise money from the community," he said.

Dr. Scott said the community has been very supportive of the project. Wednesday, someone gave them an $80,000 check.

"It's just a great place. Denison is a 'can do' community," he said.

"It takes both of us working together and all of Denison. It's in a city park and we want to make sure this is a top notch facility that both our citizens and when people come in from out of town. This represents what we want Denison to be," said Mayor Jared Johnson.

Munson Stadium is more than 70 years old and the home stands, along with the field houses, press box and concession stands, are in such desperate need of repairs that engineers said it will not be safe to use after the 2013 season.
