Domestic violence awareness month also acknowledges men

Domestic violence awareness month is here, and focus is not just on women.

About 15 percent of men have experienced domestic violence, according to the Family Shelter of Southern Oklahoma.

This number doesn't reflect the cases that go unreported, especially physical violence.

Executive director of the shelter Debra Woodbridge says this is sometimes because gender roles make men feel like they shouldn't report abuse.

"And part of that is because society expects them to be the breadwinner and to take all of this," Woodbridge said.

The shelter has provided services for four men this year.
