DURANT, OK -- City officials say they're experiencing an economic boom in 2013.

Mayor Jerry Tomlinson said many new businesses are moving into the area - one of which is a La Quinta Inn.

"We've been primed I think for years to come, in the past several years," he said.

One major reason is the new off-ramp from Southbound US 69/75, which is set to open in the next few days.

Durant Industrial Authority Executive Director Tommy Kramer said the retail area along University Blvd is exploding, anticipating heavy traffic from the new off-ramp.

"And so we have just really been blessed, we're really excited, and as our mayor and our city council work together with our industrial authority, we call that team Durant," he said.

Tomlinson said they're also building a new apartment complex, 14 new homes, a Chevrolet dealer and a new CVS Pharmacy.

"We're excited about the growth - and truly improving the quality of life in our area," he said.

But he said with growth comes growing pains.

"And we're not opposed to those pains, if we can just work through it and with it," he said.

He said they're working to improve the infrastructure and find new sources of water.

"We've got to look at water needs beyond a year's supply," he said.

But Kramer and Tomlinson both say the future looks bright for the city.

"We're gonna continue to be a leader in Oklahoma in new business, business development, and job creation. We're excited," he said.
