Durant building Splash Pad at park

DURANT, OK-- Sherri George and her two children have lived in the neighborhood, near D.V. Keithley Park, for 5 years. She was thrilled to hear the city council approved plans to build a new splash pad.

"I don't have transportation and it's just within walking distance and it's wonderful because there are a lot of parents out there just don't have the transportation that can just go down the street and have fun."

The City of Durant received a $180,000 grant through the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department to build the Splash Pad.

"We are going to use the funds to build a splash pad in this area right behind us and a restroom," explained, grant coordinator, Rebecca Parr. "The splash pad will be ADA assessable and there is no standing water in the pad. It's something that's really taken off nationally and especially in Oklahoma."

This park was a vision of former Vice Mayor, Ron Cross. He wanted to build a water park for children who might not have a way to get to the city pool. Now his vision will become a reality.

Located on N.E 3rd street, D.V. Keithley Park is miles away from the city pool. Joshua Paradise who plays with his sister at the park and can't wait for the splash pad to open.

"It would be awesome because it's right my by house and I can walk there with my sister."

The grant not only covers improvements at Keithley park, but at the Loyd Plyer Park. Crews will add more shading for the bleachers and adding new parking for guests.

The City of Durant hopes to have the Splash Pad finished by August.

"It's going to be a great place for kids and families to come and enjoy something that is at no cost for them," Parr said.
