ADA, OK - Some ECU students and their professor put together a forum tonight to address what they say is a lack of affordable housing in the city of Ada.
A political science class at the university researched the issue under a professor. They said Ada's population is about 16,000 and there are about 7,000 housing units in the city.
Students in the class plan on spending the night in cardboard boxes to highlight the issue.
The forum included a question and answer question session with two student renters, two property owners and Ada City Planner Todd Kennemer.
The professor who teaches the class and oversaw the research said she hopes the project will help spur talks about development.
"There's not a lot of conversation between landlords and tennants or city officials and developers," said Dr. Christin Pappas, political science professor. "This is a chance to try to get those people to the table."
Kennemer said the city is hiring a consultant to help them figure out how to improve housing in Ada..
