GRAYSON COUNTY, TX - Most of us don't know what we'd do without our cell phone and other electronics so it's kind of scary to think of them not always working like when they get too hot, you could risk losing all of your data.
"I was really worried about it not working again once it had cooled off it was really frightening." said Cecilia Drennen.
We're warned to stay cool during the summer but experts say we need to take some of the same precautions with our cell phones.
Cecilia Drennen learned this the hard way when she left her iPhone in her car.
"I came out and um I had this little triangle on my phone saying my phone had overheated I was kind of freaked out I didn't know what to do so I just kind of stuck it up in front of the air conditioning for probably 10 or 15 minutes and it finally cooled off." Drennen said.
Bob Filander works at Best Buy in the Mobile phone service center. He says no cell phone will work once it reaches a certain temperature.
"Anything really over probably 90 degrees I'd say you're gonna start seeing screen issues the screen will darken and you won't be able to see it properly." Filander said.
And if the phone gets any hotter than that, Filander says it will shut down completely which can cause permanent damage, and this goes for not only cell phones but almost any electronic device with an LCD screen.
"Internal components become warped at certain temperatures so if it gets to that point the phone just won't work any electronic device won't work it happens with laptops small portable televisions the new e readers it can happen to." said Filander.
Filander says it's not always possible to prevent your cell phone from overheating especially in this Texas heat but if it does happen to you there are a few things you can do to cool it down quickly.
You can try holding it up in front of an air conditioner vent for a few minutes like Drennon did or if you have a cool water bottle handy lay it next to it.
The key is to gradually cool it down, so don't expose it to anything too cold.
