Being ready when disaster strikes

ARDMORE, OK - No severe weather in our near future, but emergency managers across Texoma are using this down time to remind everyone how important it is to always be prepared for a disaster.

Whether it is a flood, tornado or fire, disasters can hit North Texas and Southern Oklahoma at anytime. Carter County Emergency Manager Paul Tucker said the first step in being ready for these types of events is have a plan.

Every family should have a meeting place or a way to get in touch after an emergency.

Having a "go-to" kit with a radio, flashlight, extra batteries, water and food.

Tucker said a good rule of thumb is to pack enough materials to last at least 72 hours and be sure to include any important documents and pets.

Tucker said we are entering the fall storm and fire seasons and although September is designated National Preparedness Month, people should be ready at all times.
