Fire destroys Denison mobile home

DENISON, TX -- A woman is without a home, after a fire destroyed her mobile home Monday afternoon.

Assistant Fire Chief Bill Ray said the mobile home at 2807 W. Walker St. is a total loss.

"Mobile homes burn very rapidly, so they spread rapidly," he said. "So pretty much everything inside is burnt, or definitely smoke damaged."

He said a woman lives there by herself with her five cats. She did not want to be identified.

"She was reluctant to come out. There were some bystanders who came by and helped her out," Ray said. "She was concerned about her cats."

Firefighters found one cat under the house. They gave it oxygen to nurse it back to health.

A neighbor took the cat to a veterinarian - it's expected to be fine. The other four cats made it out on their own.

Sharon Sanders, with the American Red Cross, said they're putting the resident up in a hotel for the next few days.

EMS checked her out, but she refused treatment.

"That's what she's mostly worried about is her animals. We're trying to help her get the animals taken to shelters, and one's in the hospital," she said. "And just trying to take care of her."

Sanders said they'll help her moving forward.

"Well the red cross typically puts them up for three days. And then we'll help with the first month's rent and deposits," she said. "So she's got three days to basically find another place to stay."

Ray said they haven't determined the exact cause of the fire, but the fire marshal believes it is accidental.
