SAVOY, TX -- The former treasurer of Savoy's Athletic Booster Club is accused of embezzling from the organization.
Linda Berube, 45, was arrested on theft of $1,500 to $20,000 dollars and three counts of Forgery of a Financial Instrument. Savoy Police Chief Kevin Cheairs says from June 2012 to May of this year Berube, who was working as the booster club treasurer, allegedly stole from the organization on multiple occasions. She was booked into the Fannin County Jail on July 11th and posted a $4,000 dollar bond later that day.
Savoy ISD Superintendent Brian Neal says he was aware of the allegations.
"There's a lot of good people on the athletic booster club, and as soon as they found out there could be a problem then they acted appropriately and they turned it over to the authorities," Neal said.
Neal says the booster club is not directly tied to the school, that the organization's finances are completely separate.
"They're just an organization of parents and they raise money to help the athletic department buy things that they couldn't otherwise afford. It's not a huge amount of money that they donate every year, but you know they run concession stands and do some things like that," Neal
However, as a father of Savoy athletes Neal says it will be disheartening if the allegations against Berube are true.
"I would be very disappointed. I don't know what the results of the investigation are. I don't know anything about it other than what I've told you but of course I would be disappointed if it turned out it were true," Neal
We are told Berube is no longer treasurer of the booster club.
We attempted to contact Berube several times Monday, but were not able to reach her for comment.
