SHERMAN, TX - The Grayson County Sheriff's Deputy who was fired last week was indicted by a grand jury this morning for allegedly stealing more than $20,000 worth of items, including guns, from the Grayson County Sheriff's Office.
Errin William Luton, 34, of Southmayd was arrested by the Texas Rangers this morning for theft over $20,000 by a public servant and booked into the Grayson County Jail.
Sgt. Rickey Wheeler of the Grayson County Sheriff's Office said Luton's case revolves around several thefts from the property room, which was one of Luton's assignments at the Sheriff's Office.
Wheeler says the case is still under investigation by the Texas Rangers and is moving forward through the Grayson County District Attorney's Office.
Sheriff Keith Gary released this statement Wednesday:
"I am confident that this investigation will result in a conviction through our justice system. District Attorney Joe Brown and Assistant District Attorney Kerye Ashmore have supported us and advised us throughout this process. Once I learned that our employee had committed a crime, I moved quickly to rectify the problem. As a result, the employee was immediately terminated, and the criminal case brought before the Grand Jury, where an indictment was obtained."
The Sheriff's Office has implemented a new policy that requires property room keys to be locked in a safe and two of three people must be present if anyone else is in the room: The Sheriff, Chief Rains or Sgt.Wheeler.
Luton is now free on $10,000 bond, set by Judge Rim Nall in the 59th District Court.
