NEW YORK (AP) - The sophistication of a global network of thieves who drained cash machines around the globe of an astonishing $45 million in mere hours has sent ripples through the security world.

Prosecutors in New York said Thursday that the money was stolen by criminals who hacked into a database of prepaid debit cards - then drained cash machines of their dollars.

Experts warn these types of ATM crimes are becoming increasingly common and their global nature makes them hard to investigate.

Federal prosecutors say the case involved plundered ATMs in 26 countries, cyber-attacks on two banks in the Middle East and a New York cell of operatives who withdrew cash from machines.
