Grayson County Spelling Bee

DENISON, TX -- S-U-C-C-E-S-S. That's how you spell one Texoma student's morning, Wednesday.

Nicolette Schleisman went to the Grayson County spelling bee and spoke with this year's winner.

O-F-F-I-C-I-A-N-T. That's how you spell this year's winning word for the Grayson County Spelling Bee.

Now Van Alstyne 7th grader, Dakota Kern, is just one step away from the National spelling bee.

"I'm excited that I won. But I'm also wondering how I'm going to fit in time to study for the other 1000 words for the Dallas bee. But i'm excited. You're always excited when you win," said Kern.

Competing against four other elementary and middle school students. Dakota won after 15 rounds of spelling.

Her mother, Donna Kern, followed along with every word in the competition.

Donna says she's proud of the way her daughter handled the spelling bee.

"Always. Always. I'm more proud of her probably because of the way she reacted to the other contestants, in congratulating them and cheering them on and encouraging them. And so yeah. I'm proud of her character," said Donna Kern.

Dakota now advances to the Dallas Morning News Spelling Bee on March 23rd.

She says she is a competitive person, which is what got her into spelling.

"It was just something I wanted to try and now I like -- I hope I can do it next year too," said Dakota.

The Dean of the Grayson College Campus in Van Alstyne, and pronouncer of the bee, Dr. Kimberly Teel, says she is excited about this year's winner.

"It's nice that we have somebody from the area that I actually work in is going to represent our county in the spelling bee," said Dr. Teel.

And for Dakota, she may very well conquer the impossible with a victory in Dallas.
