Grayson County residents become certified storm spotters

DENISON, TX -- Grayson County now has more than 200 trained storm spotters eyeing the skies.

People of all ages spent their evening at the SkyWarn Storm Spotter training event at Grayson College.

A National Weather Service meteorologist was on hand teaching the ins and outs of all types of natural disasters. Storm spotters learned how to identify different cloud formations, and learned how to tell if a storm is capable of turning into a tornado.

The Weather Service says radar systems can't see everything that the human eye can see on the ground.

"We're very excited because as you get here in Grayson County, the lowest levels on the radar are about 5,000 to 6,000 feet above the ground. So, we really need the spotters to help identify precursors to tornadoes, so that we can help keep every body safe. Especially in the Sherman, Denison area where you have a lot of people living out here," meteorologist Dennis Cavanaugh said.

The program also took place in Cooke and Fannin counties, and many residents headed out to those events as well
