GRAYSON COUNTY, TX -- Sherman resident Spencer Taylor wasn't expecting to see snow this morning.

"I wasn't," he said. "I woke up and I was wondering what was going on."

But on the way to work, his car fell victim to the icy roadways.

"I was driving about 30 [mph], trying to go slow, and I hit a bridge. And the person in front of me slid," he said. "And I slid into the back of them. It was pretty icy this morning."

Sherman Police Sgt. D.M. Hampton said the department immediately started assessing roads and bridges when the snow started.

They shut down the bridge at Grand Avenue, which is usually the first bridge to freeze.

"Our dispatchers will try to kinda direct TxDOT to those areas that are heavily traveled, and have the most problems," Hampton said.

Officers also spent the morning assisting in traffic incidents, Hampton said.

"Fortunately we've only worked about seven incidences. Five of those I think were actually accidents," he said. "And two were kinda motorist assist, people just sliding off the road and going into ditches."

DPS Trooper Mark Tackett said things were a little more quiet along the highway.

"We've had a few accidents this morning. But the weather really hasn't impeded traffic much in this county, because the ground is so warm, most of the roadways are staying clean and clear," he said.

TxDOT was out in force this morning de-icing roadways and spreading Chad along bridges.

And Sherman residents we talked to were quite surprised when they got up this morning and said 'oh look, snow.'

"I went out and got the paper, and it was covered in snow," said Steve Bishop, Sherman resident.

It was a pleasing change of pace - and made his morning walk even better, he said.

"I think it's a lovely day," he said. "Enjoying the walk and the fresh air. And life is good."

Sherman and Fannin County residents may still encounter a few ice patches - especially on bridges - into Wednesday morning.

But officials remind all drivers to drive slow and take precautions.
