AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The Texas House has voted overwhelming to keep public money in public education, a potential death blow to high-profile school voucher proposals.

The amendment passed the Republican-controlled chamber 103-43 on Thursday. It is now set to become in the House's omnibus budget bill.

Dan Patrick, chairman of Texas Senate Education Committee, has joined top conservatives in pushing for vouchers. They say such programs allow parents to use state funds to pull students out of poor-performing public schools and send them to private ones.

But many House members say vouchers siphon money away from cash-strapped public schools.

The Senate has yet to pass its budget. And the amendment could still be removed during a conference committee reconciling the House and Senate budgets.

But its passage sent symbolic shockwaves through the Legislature.
