Immunizations on back-to-school check list

SHERMAN, TX-- 20 year old, Jacob Cavazos didn't even flinch as he got his Meningitis Immunization, at the Grayson County Health Department. He had to get it before starting Culinary School. The shot cost him 90 bucks.

"I'd rather pay $90 and not get Meningitis then get Meningitis."

Starting in January, Texas law requires any college student under the age of 30, to get the Meningitis shot before entering a classroom.

At the Grayson County Health Department they offer the vaccine for a small price if you're under the age of 18, but when you hit 19, It's going to cost you.

"Children 18 years of age and younger are charged $14, per visit. ," Nancy Grella, the immunization nurse for Grayson County Health Department said.

She said in an average one afternoon, she will see 45 different patients and give over 100 shots.

"Nothing is ever 100%, but if you can better your chances of not catching the disease, it's very much worth it."

Local Pharmacies, like Walgreens and CVS also give vaccines. The Texas Health Department web site said "students without proper documentation of the required vaccinations or a valid exemption will not be allowed to attend school."

Most students, like Kathryne McGinnes, are happy to get a prick in the arm, if it's going to keep them healthy.

"I think it's a good thing, so we don't get sick."
