Inmate in critical condition after being hit by semi truck in Atoka

ATOKA, OK -- An inmate is in critical condition after he was hit by a semi truck on Highway 69 in Atoka.

Police Chief Gene Dodson says Proctor McNeal was picking up litter on the side of the highway when he was hit by the 18 wheeler.

Dodson says the accident happened near Community Chapel Road, where the driver was trying to switch lanes and drifted onto the shoulder and struck McNeal.

McNeal suffered a fractured skull, lacerated spleen and broken back.

He was airlifted to a medical center in Plano.

The driver of the semi was cited for leaving a direct course of travel and other charges are still pending.
