LAMAR COUNTY, TX -- After receiving a call of a body found in the 6500-block of Highway 82 West Sunday morning, Lamar County Sheriff Deputies and Texas Rangers quickly obtained a warrant for the arrest of 33-year-old David Scott Powell.

Sheriff Scott Cass says the victim, 54-year-old David Wayne Powell is his father.

"He is the father to the son David Scott Powell, who we have in custody as a suspect in the homicide," said Cass.

A family friend asked a nearby neighbor to check on Mr. Powell after she hadn't heard from him in a couple of days.

"A friend of the family was contacted and asked to go and see if they could check on his whereabouts," said Cass. " That's when he located him in the shop building."

A preliminary autopsy shows that the senior Powell died from blunt force trauma to the head.

Sheriff Cass tells News 12 that Powell's son had just moved in with him, days prior to his death.

"He had not been living on the property but for just a short time," said Cass.

Sheriff's Detectives are still investigating what led up to the murder. David Scott Powell remains in custody at the Lamar County Jail on a $150,000 bond.
