LAMAR COUNTY, TX-- A Lamar County man has turned himself in for starting a nearly 90 acre fire in Lamar Point over the weekend.

Authorities say Rex Wilkins of Sumner turned himself into the Justice of the Peace's office on Tuesday. He is charged with a misdemeanor offense of reckless damage or destruction, and paid a $267 fine.

Fire Officials say the fire started around 3:30 P.M. Saturday when Wilkins was driving, and embers from a smoker he was carrying flew out starting multiple fires along FM 1500 and FM 79.

He pleaded no contest to the charge.

Lamar County Sheriff, Scott Cass, says he commends all the volunteer fire departments for their quick responses, and reminds residents that Lamar County is still under a burn ban.
