DURANT, OK -- If there were a shooting situation in Texoma, emergency dispatchers in Bryan, Love and Pittsburg Counties are prepared.

They spent their day getting advanced training on how to handle an active shooter phone call. Dispatchers refreshed their memory on how to process the situation, the important instructions to give a caller to keep them safe, and the right questions to ask so first responders can understand.

"They're the first point of contact when there's a shooting. So, the information they gather is crucial in making sure that officers understand this is an active shooter, we have to get to the school, we have to neutralize the shooter," instructor Tina Chaffin said.

Instructors say the number of mass shootings recently in the U.S. prompted this advanced training.
