Local restaurants and hog hunters featured on Animal Planet

SHERMAN, TX-Several local hunters and restaurants caught a big break on national television after they were featured in a new series on Animal Planet.

The network aired its new series "Eating the Enemy" Thursday night, which seeks out a region's invasive species and then turns them into a delicacy. One of their first episodes was shot in Texoma focusing on wild hogs.

Cackle and Oink Barbecue owner, Aaron Vogel said it's surreal his restaurant has been featured on Animal Planet's new series "Eating the Enemy."

"I still can't believe it, we've worked really hard for eight years to get to this point and this is one thing I can check off the bucket list, national TV!" He said.

An episode of "Eating the Enemy" focused on the wild hog problem in Grayson county. Last August, Animal Planet crews followed local hog hunters and several area restaurants for the segment.

"It was awesome, it was a lot of fun. It was really different having all the cameras around."

One of the local hog hunters involved in the show is Wild Hog Hunters' Garrett Patton, who watched the series premiere Thursday night.

"We're reliving a lot of it, there's a lot that we weren't sure they're gonna show. I mean, the thing most people don't know is that we filmed for two days just to make that segment," he said.

As part of the show, local restaurants also figured out how to turn the wild hog into a delicacy and make it part of the menu for a day. So, Vogel made a twist of the "turducken," instead of turkey, duck and chicken, he used brisket, bacon and wild boar.

"Smoked it for about 16 hours out back. It's about the size of a big prime rib and then when we sliced it we could see all the layers just perfect. It was righteous," he said.

And Patton tried it.

"It was really good. Wild hogs are typically a very dry meat and, with all the meat that he wrapped around it, it kept a lot of moisture in and it was really good," he said.

"It was just a great opportunity for Texoma in general to make the map. And hey, it's national TV!" Vogel said.

Vogel said they are thinking about keeping the wild Boar Turducken on their menu, but it's up to their customers to decide.

The wild boar episode of Eating the Enemy will re-air New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
