Local woman starts petition for volunteer fire department funding

GRAYSON COUNTY, TX -- Volunteer fire departments across the state of Texas lost a lot of their funding. A local woman is taking a stand, to get that funding restored.

In 2011, Governor Rick Perry announced volunteer fire departments' funding would be cut from $30 million to $7 million.

So, Ella Fitzbag has started an online petition. She will travel to Austin Friday to deliver the signatures collected thus far. Fitzbag says she is passionate about the safety of the community and wants funding to be restored for those who volunteer and risk their lives

"For two years, our volunteer fire departments, our firefighters in our communities have been at risk. And that's why I started the petition, because I wanted to take it down to the governor's office and show them that people all over Texas are really concerned about this, and we want the money to be there for our fire departments," Fitzbag said.

Her goal is at least 1,000 signatures. If you'd like to sign the petition we've posted a link below.
