Weather Aware conditions continue overnight due to the potential for locally heavy rainfall. A Flash Flood Watch is in effect until 7 a.m. for the northernmost portions of Texoma including Atoka, Coal, Johnston, Murray and Pontotoc Counties Beware of flooded road-ways and never drive around barricades or into water more than six inches deep. High rainfall rates may reduce visibility and also increase the risk of hydroplaning. Turn around, don’t drown! Rain ends NW to SE during the day Thursday.
SHERMAN, TX -- A longtime Texoma lawman, who served as Sherman's police chief in the 1980's, has passed away. J.D. Pickens died Friday at his Sherman home at age 88.
Pickens was born and raised in Calera. He served in the Army after high school before coming back home to work as a Durant policeman in 1952.
He then moved south to Sherman a year later where he spent 35 years in law enforcement, eventually working his way up to police chief in 1981.
Current Sherman Police Chief Otis Henry, who was hired by Pickens, called him "a devoted servant to the people of Sherman."
"The department extends their condolences to his family and friends as we mourn his loss," Henry said.
Funeral services are Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Fairview Baptist Church.
