Mud race benefits fire departments in Grayson County

GRAYSON COUNTY, TX - Hundreds of people battled through the mud and jumped through obstacles to raise money for both men and women in Grayson County who do so much more.

More than 500 people suited up Saturday morning to get dirty and have fun in the annual "Run for the Hills" mud race.

They were testing their strength and endurance for the men and women who face much tougher obstacles everyday.

"The Grayson County receives the funds from the event and then they allocate to the different departments within Grayson County that actually help volunteer the day of the event and leading up to the event," said Sunni Hayes, a Run of the Hills volunteer.

One mud runner, T.C. Nicholas, said participating in the event has a special meaning to him.

"Actually, firefighters are a huge deal for me. My dad was a firefighter for 23 years. So this is a double whammy. I get to do something I love. I get to support people that I love. Firefighters are like family to me. So it was important to me," said Nicholas.

The mud race was held at Loose Wheels in Denison and made up of multiple natural and man-made obstacles.

"There's over 30 obstacles . It's about a five kilometer course. Run for the hills, of course, there are a lot of hills. They've also added some more loops in this year so there are more hills involved," said Hayes.

This year a water slide was added. A 300 foot vertical drop into a mud pit, making things fun and exciting for even some of the more experienced runners.

"I usually do the longer stuff, 50K, 50 milers, so the obstacles were different and that's what I liked about it. You didn't know what to expect coming around the next turn. Instead of having to scout the course, it's just a surprise around every turn, deep mud, almost swimming, all different stimuli...it was great," said Nicholas.

The past two years Run for the Hills has raised more than $10,000 each year. This year, organizers hope to bring in at least $15,000.
