GALVESTON, Texas (AP) - A Houston man convicted of fatally shooting a 79-year-old woman outside a Southeast Texas courthouse last year has been sentenced to death.
Jurors who convicted 42-year-old Bartholomew Granger last week of capital murder in the death of Minnie Ray Sebolt deliberated for a little less than two hours Tuesday before deciding to send him to death row. Their other option was a life prison term with no chance of parole.
Granger admitted he opened fire on his daughter outside the courthouse in downtown Beaumont in March last year but insisted he did not kill Sebolt. She was a bystander walking outside the courthouse, where Granger's daughter had testified against him in a sexual assault case. Granger's daughter survived but was in a coma for three months.
