SHERMAN, TX - Tx-Dot and the Federal Highway Administration are reminding motorists this week that speeding through work zones can be deadly.
It's national Work Zone Awareness week. For many motorists the first thing that comes to mind when driving into a work zone is the fact that they're being delayed. Every April The Texas Department of Transportation teams up with the Federal Highway Administration to remind motorists to approach work zones with caution. This week also serves as a reminder of the victims lost in work zone accidents.
"In 2009 we had 108 people killed in work zones 4 out of 5 of those were motorists 1 out of 5 were construction workers,"said TX-Dot area engineer, David Selman.
The intersection of FM 84 and FM 406 in Denison is getting a left turn lane so that drivers traveling northbound on 84 won't have to stop behind someone waiting to turn left on to 406. Selman says this is part of a safety program and the intersection was chosen based upon the number of accidents that have occurred there in the past. He cautions motorists to adhere to the signs...
"We need motorists to pay attention when they're going through a work zone because if they're not paying attention it can be a dangerous situation," said Selman.
According to TX-DOT, they saw a 35 percent decrease in work zone fatalities in 2009 from the previous year because of increased safety measures and public outreach efforts. Scott Taylor is the Assistant Director of engineering and public works for the city of Sherman. He says that there is still work to do.
"I think that's really what awareness week is about is to make sure that you understand that those warning signs are out there those barricades are out there those barrels are out there those cones are out there for a reason," Taylor said.
So basically the most important things for motorists to remember when approaching a work zone are slow down and pay attention, it could save a life. In Sherman, Jalah Gray First News.
